What prices are these?
Real-time locational marginal prices at CAISO's three trading hubs, in dollars per megawatt-hour, five-minute resolution. This is the wholesale price load settles against, not a retail rate.
Why do the hubs differ?
Transmission constraints along Path 15 and Path 26. CAISO runs from the Oregon border to Mexico, and when the north-south lines fill, Northern California separates from Southern California. Hydro and imports move the north, gas and solar move the south, so the two ends price on their own weather.
