A Flex Alert is CAISO's call to ease off power from 4 to 9 PM on stressed evenings. CAISO posts the official alert at flexalert.org. Here is the live grid underneath it.
Today's load vs forecastdemand against CAISO's own forecast
What is a Flex Alert?
A Flex Alert is a call from CAISO for the public to voluntarily cut power use, usually from 4 to 9 PM. It is issued on the hottest days, when the evening ramp is steep and operating reserves run thin. The ask is simple: pre-cool your home earlier, then set the thermostat higher and hold off big appliances during those hours.
How do I know if one is called today?
CAISO declares Flex Alerts through its own channels and posts them at flexalert.org. This page does not issue or grade alerts, it is not CAISO. What it shows is the live grid underneath: today's demand against the forecast peak, so you can see how close the grid is running while CAISO's official word stands as the authority.
What happens if the grid gets tighter?
Beyond a Flex Alert, CAISO can escalate to Restricted Maintenance Operations and then to an Energy Emergency Alert, EEA 1 through 3, the last step before rotating outages. Conservation during the evening ramp is what keeps the grid off that ladder, and it has worked, most visibly during the September 2022 heat wave.
