What is NYISO, and what does this page show?

NYISO runs New York's grid and wholesale power market. This page reads its condition live: statewide demand, today's peak so far, generation by fuel, and the real-time price in each of the 11 load zones, A in the west to K on Long Island.

How fresh is this data?

Demand, zone prices, and the fuel mix all post on NYISO's five-minute cadence, from its public MIS feeds. Each number carries its own timestamp, and /status shows every feed's age.

Why is the city always more expensive?

Transmission into New York City and Long Island runs near its limits, so zones J and K routinely clear above upstate. That gap is the congestion story of the New York grid, and the map's fill shows it every afternoon.

What is dual fuel in the generation mix?

Units that can burn either natural gas or oil, a New York specialty. NYISO reports them as their own category because they switch fuels when gas gets scarce, which is exactly when the grid is most stressed.
