Zone shapes are each utility's retail service territory (HIFLD 2025), the closest public stand-in for PJM's transmission zones. Muni and co-op pockets inside a zone stay unshaded, and OVEC has no retail territory to draw. Zone fill and price tags are real-time five-minute LMPs. City readings are live NWS station observations, colored by anomaly vs each hour's ERA5 seasonal normal (2019–2024).

What is PJM, and what does this page show?
PJM runs the grid for 13 states and DC, from Chicago to the Atlantic, the largest power market in the country. This page reads its condition live: RTO demand, today's peak so far, generation by fuel, and the real-time price in each of the 21 transmission zones.
How fresh is this data?
Demand posts on a five-minute cadence and the fuel mix hourly, both from PJM's own Data Miner feeds. Zone prices post within minutes as unverified and are verified the next business day, and this page updates in place when verification lands. /status shows every feed's age.
Why do zone prices spread apart?
Transmission congestion. When the lines between regions run full, cheap power can't reach the expensive side. On a hot afternoon the eastern seaboard zones routinely clear at multiples of the western ones, and the map's fill shows exactly where.
What should I watch on a hot day?
Demand against today's peak, and the zone map going bright. The five hours that set capacity bills (the 5CP mechanism) are afternoons when the whole RTO strains at once. The dashboard publishes a daily call on whether today is one of them.
